about

"The Dark Day" was recorded amidst charcoal tangerine skies, the strange day in San Francisco when there was no sun due to toxic smoke from a multitude of wildfires burning throughout the state. Partial proceeds from this EP will be donated to the California Fire Foundation to help victims so they may purchase basic necessities such as food, clothing or medicine.

Chilling, intense and beautiful, "The Dark Day" transports you into this frightful melancholy and otherworldly environment with only a piano.

Here is the personal story from Jill Tracy:

When I opened my eyes the morning of September 9, 2020, the bedroom was pitch black. Likely I had set the clock incorrectly—it was obviously the middle of the night.
But the phone’s screen glowed 9:30am. I crept out of bed, into the living room, and met with more eerie consuming darkness. But all the drapes were open. Everything was completely silent. Not even a bird was chirping. The only thing I could hear was my heart beginning to beat faster.

Something was definitely wrong.

From the window, I noticed an intense blood orange red. I suddenly realized it was the sky. The entire sky. A smoky tangerine aura colored the apartment.

For the first time since coronavirus lockdown, I was truly frightened. What had happened while I slept? Was this the day the world would end?

I read the news: Smoke and ash from West Coast wildfires began to settle into our foggy San Francisco— so much so that the sun could not even shine through it! The entire day was cloaked in an apocalyptic charcoal tangerine.

I needed to contemplate the gravity of the situation, express my feelings while I was isolated all alone. I sat at the piano amidst the tangerine skies, and began to record.

These are the three pieces you will hear on “The Dark Day.”
Spontaneous emotional reactions through my music. One take only.

This is the most intimate thing I can share with an audience. You are able to be right there with me, transported sonically right into those chilling, somber, but strangely beautiful moments. This surreal day of life practically on another planet.

REVIEWS:

“Superior artists don’t need complexity. They can move you with just their presence and an instrument, which she plays here with subtle shadings of tempo and dynamics, and sophisticated dissonant harmonies.
Let us pray for the pandemic to end, and for Jill Tracy to continue to create these sublime piano instrumentals.”
—NPR’s Hearts of Space host/producer Stephen Hill

“So beautiful…truly talented… Jill Tracy’s music opens pictures in the mind. I love the melodic structure, and the style. Its a perfect mood music.
Her piano tracks are like a ghostly “Pearl” (Brian Eno / Harold Budd,) but unique in their mysterious nature that open that same door. I could cry, but there seems to be a mystery that I am seeking answer, but also by expressing the solitude. In some ways makes me think of those Italian made Warhol films.” —cEvin Key (Skinny Puppy)

“I turned the lights down low, lit a log fire, a candle & some incense & let Jill Tracy’s beautiful nocturnal music wash over me. I was utterly transported! It is very beautiful & powerful indeed. Exquisite work!” —David J, (Bauhaus)
